Teachers Successfully Stall Attack on Pensions

Illinois teachers successfully stalled a set of proposals that would have gutted the state pension system for public workers. Lawmakers are talking about holding hearings over the summer, with the intention of bringing the bill, SB 512, back for consideration. (See the previous Just BloNo article.)

Bloomington-Normal teachers have been on the front line in defending their pensions. Members of the Bloomington Education Association and Unit Five Education Association traveled to Springfield on May 4th, bringing this issue to their representatives. Later, a meeting of 125 teachers at the IEA headquarters was held for educational purposes and to inform members in the schools of the developments.
