Residents in Bloomington-Normal learned Wednesday evening about gas extraction using an environmentally destructive process called hydraulic fracturing (“fracking” or “hydrofracking”). Numerous local environmental organizations organized a screening of GASLAND, a documentary on this issue, which will occur on Wednesday, June 15th, 7 pm at the Normal Theater.
The issue is particularly important for BloNo residents since last March, as reported by the Pantagraph, Production Energy LLC of Iowa showed interest in using a form fracking for gas extraction in McLean county.
Darrell Hines of Production Energy withdrew his request to change zoning for oil and gas drilling, and has gone on record saying that he will not resubmit the zoning change request “in the foreseeable future”. However, he said that this is a shame since “McLean County has oil”.
Hines attempted to have the zoning change put through without a public hearing, which he claims would tip off his competition.
Residents expressed alarm at the idea of bringing fracking to McLean County, and environmental organizations have organized the GASLAND movie screening to bring awareness to the issue.
