Family Reunion Picnic Brings Together GLBT Community

A good time was had by all at the Annual Family Reunion Picnic, held Sunday afternoon at the Underwood Park in Normal. Sponsored by the Advocacy Council for Human Rights, the Family Reunion Picnic is a way for the GLBT community of Bloomington-Normal to get together and enjoy themselves over food and conversation.

The inclusive tradition began over ten years ago as a way to counteract the problem of some families not accepting LGBT family members. The picnic was created as a “family” activity where everyone can be themselves and not worry about being accepted.

This year, over 30 people attended the picnic despite the early afternoon rain. Picnic participants ate and conversed under the Underwood Park Shelter and participated in a raffle that benefited the Advocacy Council and the McLean County AIDS Task Force.
