The political efforts of immigrants and their allies in Illinois, including local activists with Illinois People’s Action (IPA), resulted in a major victory last week with the passage of a bill that will grant driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
IPA worked with other Illinois organizations in the Highway Safety Coalition. The local organization was largely responsible for securing the vote of area politicians, as well as for organizing groups of BloNo residents to support the bill in Springfield at critical times.
Sonny Garcia, a leader of Illinois People’s Action, provided information last month on the Temporary Visitor’s Drivers License (TVDL), for which undocumented immigrants would be eligible upon Governor Quinn’s signing. Local immigrant rights activists fought for driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants, in part as a measure to deal with McLean County Sheriff Emery’s policy of contacting the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for all individuals without licenses stopped by police officers.
